Biography

Dawn Buckingham's story is, in many ways, the story conservatives point to when they talk about the American Dream. She grew up on a ranch near the Texas coast before moving to Central Texas, and she has never settled for less than her dreams. Unable to afford college, she lived at home and worked two jobs to put herself through the University of Texas at Austin, graduating Magna Cum Laude and debt-free — a path of self-reliance and grit that resonates deeply with conservative values of hard work over handouts. She went on to earn her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and built a career as an eye surgeon, eventually becoming the owner of Eye Physicians of Austin, a small business she runs to this day. Her roots run deep: Buckingham comes from a family with generations of Texas heritage, and true to that pioneer spirit, she served as a volunteer firefighter and attended the Texas A&M Fire School, and remains an avid hunter and outdoorswoman. Before entering statewide politics, she served on the Lake Travis Independent School District school board from 2014 to 2015, reflecting the kind of local, hands-on community service conservatives like to see in their leaders. Buckingham broke ground in 2016 as the first Republican and first woman ever elected to the Texas State Senate from Travis County, representing Senate District 24 from 2017 to 2023. In the Senate, she served on the Criminal Justice, Higher Education, and Veterans Affairs and Military Installations committees — a portfolio that squarely tracks conservative priorities: public safety, education, and support for veterans. In 2022, she made history again, winning election as the 29th Texas Land Commissioner and becoming the first woman in Texas history to hold that office, sworn in on January 10, 2023. As Land Commissioner, she has framed her mission around supporting Texas energy production, helping Texans recover after disasters, funding public schools through the Permanent School Fund, serving Texas veterans, and securing the border — issues at the heart of the modern Texas conservative agenda. Her border stance has drawn national attention: the Border Patrol union endorsed her re-election after she offered General Land Office land for border wall construction, a move supporters cite as proof of her commitment to border security even in a role not traditionally associated with immigration policy. Buckingham is now running for a second term, having advanced from the Republican primary in March 2026 to face Democrat Benjamin Flores in November. Supporters describe her as the American Dream personified — a self-made small-business owner, physician, and public servant who combines old-fashioned Texas grit with modern conservative governance.

Policy Positions

  1. Energy production

She backs continued oil and gas development on state lands, positioning the General Land Office as a driver of Texas energy leadership and revenue for the state.

  2. Border security

She has directed General Land Office property to be used for border wall construction, a stance that earned her an endorsement from the Border Patrol union.

  3. Veterans support

Through the GLO's veterans programs (including land, home, and housing assistance for Texas veterans), she has made veteran services a stated priority of her office.
